Is there a difference between a Life Coach and a Therapist?

Updated: Mar 17, 2022

This is a question we get a lot, and Yes, there are a number of differences between a Life Coach and a Therapist! The main difference is that life coaching is geared towards the present and future, whereas therapy is oriented towards the past. Life coaching can utilize experiences from the client’s past, old stories in their head and lessons learned to apply to the present and future, but not a lot of time is spent lingering on past events or trauma.

It is helpful to remember that life coaches work on goals, while therapy works on mental health; both are highly beneficial to improve your quality of life! They often work together to create a holistic, well-rounded person.

Reasons to seek out a Licensed Therapist would be when you are feeling distressed about life, anxious, depressed, grieving, or have experienced trauma of any sort. They have incredible tools that will facilitate healing and growth as you work together.

Reasons to seek a Certified Life Coach would be if you are looking to become unstuck in a life situation, looking to set and achieve goals, create a different perspective, create work-life balance, accelerate your career and replace unhealthy habits with healthy ones.

What are the benefits of partnering with Shift Coaching Services?

We help successful people achieve their goals by transforming their lives from the inside out.

We will walk alongside life with you, going through the most difficult and challenging times, guiding you to see things differently, refine your approach, offer perspective, help you to create a work-life balance, self-care, goal setting, hold you accountable, and help you wherever you are feeling stuck. We also want to help rebrand you, style you, and help you look as good on the outside as you feel on the inside. We strive to partner with you to become the best version of yourself.

Hiring a coach is not a sign of weakness or failure, in fact, it’s quite the opposite. Asking for help or accountability is a sign of strength, determination and commitment to yourself and your goals. Some of the most successful people in the world have coaches, Bill Gates, Oprah, Serena Williams to name a few. We ourselves are coaches and we have hired a coach to help us on this journey of life and business.

One of my favorite coaching quotes is from football coach, Pete Carrol, “Each person holds so much power within themselves that needs to be let out. Sometimes they just need a little nudge, a little direction, a little support, a little coaching, and the greatest things can happen.”

As your life coaches, we want to be a partner, someone who is there for you through life’s most difficult and challenging times, able to guide you through and help you to see things differently, refine your approach and achieve your loftiest dreams.
